A great white elephant gift is half the gift and half the packaging. Prank gift boxes, real boxes printed to look like absurd fake products, are the easiest way to win the night. Here are our favorite box-and-gift pairings, each with a packaging plan.

Prank box tips
- Buy the box. Prank gift boxes cost about $10 at Walmart, Amazon, Target and Etsy. Most hold a gift up to about 9" x 11" x 3".
- Weight it. A bag of dried beans or rice in a zip bag makes any box feel mysterious.
- Rattle it. A few dice or wooden craft sticks in a small bag make the box sound interesting.
- Show it off. Wrap the box in clear cellophane so the fake product is visible from across the room. That's what gets it stolen.
- Mind the budget. Most groups use a $20–$30 limit. The box is about $10, so pick a gift that fits what's left, or agree the box doesn't count.
